Being a professional lorry, bus or coach driver in the modern day requires a range of certificates before you are allowed out on the road. One of these certificates is the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, otherwise known as CPC. This qualification was first unveiled in 2007 by the UK, as a European directive. It was introduced across Europe with the aim of improving road safety and maintaining high standards of driving.
In order to get your Driver CPC you must pass a series of initial qualification tests with both theory and practical sections. You must take these tests every 5 years with 35 hours of periodic training or the certificate will lapse. Without keeping up with your hours, you will be deemed unsuitable to drive a lorry, bus or coach.
CPC Training consists of 4 main stages, the Theory Test, Case Studies, Licence acquisition and Driver CPC Practical Test. The Theory Test involves a multiple-choice test and also a test on hazard perception. The Case Studies stage uses realistic scenarios to test the driver’s judgement making skills. The Licence Acquisition stage involves practical road driving, as well as safety questions and off-road exercises. The final stage to complete is the Driver CPC Practical Test. Here you will be tested on vehicle loading, preventing the trafficking of illegal immigrants, assessing emergency situations and carrying out vehicle safety checks.
