How to Be Prepared for A Road Trip

With Summer finally here, are you heading out on a long day out or UK holiday with the family? In this blog we have put together our top tips for a safe and happy journey!

Plan Your Route

You may think that due to technology like Sat Nav’s its easy just to get to your destination, but they can sometimes be at fault… Although we encourage the use of Sat Nav’s it’s best if you are going to a totally new destination to have an overview of the main roads and motorways you will be driving on. Plus, it never hurts to take a map.

Complete Essential Car Checks

Even though cars are made for long journeys, it is important that you complete essential checks before setting off. First of all, check the fluids this includes oil, coolant and windscreen wash. If they are below the correct level, top them up. Next check the air pressure in your tires to make sure they are acceptable. Don’t forget to check your spare tire pressure too, as it will save you lots of time if you need to change a tire.

Another check that is essential is the tread on your tires, remember you must have at least 1.6mm of tread on your tire or it is illegal. Depending on the journey, weigh up whether it might be best to get your tires replaced before heading off.

Cater for Your Passengers

If you are heading on a family holiday you must make sure to keep everyone happy as an unwanted distraction could be dangerous. Pack car entertainment for little ones such as colouring books, travel games and iPad’s. Remembering to also bring some food like sandwiches and smaller snacks to keep them topped up.

Schedule regular stops to let your passengers and you have a rest from driving, 15 minutes every 2 hours is recommended to keep everyone feeling fresh.
