Our Tips For Long Distance Lorry Driving

Our Tips For Long Distance Lorry Driving

Whether you’ve been a lorry driver for most of your life or you’re just new to the profession, long distance journeys can throw up challenges for anyone. It is something that truckers of course get used to, but there are always new solutions that you can use to make your journeys that little bit easier. In this blog we offer some of our top tips for long distance lorry driving.

Plan Your Journey

In all walks of life planning can make things easier in the long run! This couldn’t be truer when it comes to long distance journeys for lorry drivers. Before every drive you should plan your route and times with precision. Research the roads and look for any potential hazards, travel disruptions or events that could cause traffic jams!

Keep Healthy

When you are so focused on doing your job to the best of your ability, it can be easy to forget to focus on your health. You cannot however underestimate the difference that looking after yourself can make when driving long distance. To prevent dehydration, you should drink plenty of water. Health professionals say that 1-2 litres a day is a good amount. It’s also good to avoid fast food by preparing fruit, veg, salads, nuts or other healthy meal options before you set off. When it comes to your mental wellbeing, a great idea is to keep yourself entertained while driving with audiobooks and podcasts. There are some fantastic options available on apps such as Spotify. If you’re away from family a lot on long distance journeys, you can also set up Skype or Facetime calls when you get a break.

Take A Break

Speaking of breaks, it is absolutely essential that you take the correct breaks and get plenty of sleep when taking this time out. The stats show that 1 in 6 deaths or serious injury on the roads are due to drivers falling asleep at the wheel, so we can’t stress enough how important this is. The regular adult needs an average of 8 hours sleep each night in order to function at their best. You should park your truck in a safe and quiet place and set yourself regular settling and rising times to keep a good sleeping pattern.
